One road in, and why that matters
Most Orange County cities have two or three reasonable freeway approaches, so a slowdown on one road is an inconvenience, not a bottleneck. Laguna Beach doesn't have that luxury. Laguna Canyon Road — SR-133 — is the only route connecting the inland freeway network to the coast here, and every car, delivery truck, and event shuttle bound for downtown funnels through it. We build extra time into a Laguna Beach pickup or drop-off specifically because of this — not out of general caution, but because the single-road geometry means there's no alternate route to fall back on if it backs up.
Arts festival season on SR-133
Laguna Beach's identity is bound up with its art scene, and summer brings that identity to a head. The grounds associated with the Pageant of the Masters draw sustained crowds through the summer months, and that traffic layers directly onto the same Laguna Canyon Road bottleneck described above — there is no way around it, only through it. We treat summer festival dates as their own category when scheduling, building pickup windows that account for the corridor at its busiest rather than the corridor on an average day.

Once you're through the canyon and into town, Laguna Beach's character shows up in its streets: hillside lanes climbing away from the water, narrow approaches to the coves, and a downtown built around Main Beach and the gallery district rather than a wide commercial strip.
